Documenting decadal disturbance dynamics reveals archipelago-specific recovery and compositional change on Polynesian reefs

چکیده
Coral reefs are declining at an unprecedented rate as a consequence of local and global stressors. Using 26-year monitoring database, we analyzed the loss recovery dynamics coral communities across seven islands three archipelagos in French Polynesia. Reefs Society Islands recovered relatively quickly after disturbances, which was driven by corals genus Pocillopora (84% total recovery). In contrast, Tuamotu Austral poorly or not all. Across archipelagos, predation crown-of-thorns starfish destruction cyclones outweighed effects heat stress events on mortality. Despite apparently limited effect temperature-mediated stressors, homogenization towards dominance Archipelago failure to fully recover from disturbances other two concern resilience Polynesian face intensifying climate-driven

Historical Reconstruction Reveals Recovery in Hawaiian Coral Reefs
Coral reef ecosystems are declining worldwide, yet regional differences in the trajectories, timing and extent of degradation highlight the need for in-depth regional case studies to understand the factors that contribute to either ecosystem sustainability or decline. We reconstructed social-ecological interactions in Hawaiian coral reef environments over 700 years using detailed datasets on ec...
متن کاملCorallimorph and Montipora Reefs in Ulithi Atoll, Micronesia: documenting unusual reefs
Here we report the presence of two unusual reef types at Ulithi Atoll, Yap State, Federated States of Micronesia: 1. a corallimorph-dominated reef off the island of Mogmog is found within an otherwise coral-dominated area, and 2. a general spread of Montipora reefs that were found to dominate the reef landscapes near inhabited islands. The Montipora reefs primarily occur near villages and in di...
متن کاملA sea change in Smuggler's Cove? Detection of decadal-scale compositional transitions in the subfossil record
Molluscan death assemblages in coastal marine settings are compositionally dynamic in time and space. Here, we describe a significant temporal faunal transition recorded over some two decades in the upper sedimentary veneer of a currently accumulating shell bed in Smuggler's Cove, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. It had been demonstrated previously that molluscan death assemblages in the study are...
متن کاملPredatory fish depletion and recovery potential on Caribbean reefs
The natural, prehuman abundance of most large predators is unknown because of the lack of historical data and a limited understanding of the natural factors that control their populations. Determining the supportable predator biomass at a given location (that is, the predator carrying capacity) would help managers to optimize protection and would provide site-specific recovery goals. We assess ...
متن کاملDeveloping a Compositional Reservoir Model for Investigating the Effect of Interfacial Tension on Oil Recovery
In this paper, a simplified formulation for compositional reservoir simulator is presented. These types of simulators are used when inter-phase mass transfer depends on phase composition as well as pressure. The procedure for solving compositional model equations is completely described. For equilibrium calculation, property estimation Peng Robinson equation of state is used. This equation ...
